SPARTANS SETTLE FOR DRAW AT HOME AGAINST TIMBERWOLVES

LANGLEY, B.C. – Despite a late push in the second half, the Trinity Western Spartans men's soccer team settled for a 1-1 draw at home against the UNBC Timberwolves at Chase Office Field.

Caleb Johnson (Calgary) scored the lone goal for the Spartans, while TWU goalkeeper Sebastian Colyn (Langley) made three saves. UNBC's Anthony Preston scored for the Timberwolves while goalie Rob Goodey made seven stops for the visitors.

With their first draw of the season, the Spartans move to 6-4-1 on the year, while UNBC's record moves to 4-5-3.

The Timberwolves got on the board first in the 39th minute, after a deflected free kick from Preston beat Colyn to break the scoreless tie.

The free kick opportunity came after TWU defender Scott Poffenroth (Calgary) was handed a yellow card for a tackle just outside the Spartans box.

The Spartans equalized minutes in the 62nd minute, when Johnson slotted home a Caleb Jemmott (Calgary) header for the tying goal.

The Spartans almost added another in the 76th minute, when Nicholas Coulter (Langley, B.C.) took the ball from a sprawling Goodey in the box, but his offering hit the cross bar.

Despite a number of late chances for the Spartans in stoppage time, neither team was able to break the deadlock.

TWU finished the night with an 17-4 edge in shots and 8-4 edge in shots on goal.

QUOTABLE
TWU Head Coach Mike Shearon
"In some ways it was an okay game, we did some good things and definitely created enough chances to win the game and come out with a victory tonight. At the same time it's massively disappointing. I think there were some things we could have done better, while they caused us a lot of problems in terms of their possession, and as a result we lost points tonight."

On tomorrow's rematch:
"Tomorrow we need to take our chances and be a little more patient in their possession, recognizing the spaces that they may try to get into. They're a well coached team that's difficult to play against. There hasn't been a weekend where they've lost both games, so we need to make sure we come out and get a victory tomorrow night."
