SPARTANS WIN 2-0 OVER THOMPSON RIVERS

KAMLOOPS, B.C. – In a battle between the two teams tied atop the Canada West men's soccer West Division standings it was Trinity Western that came out on top, with a 2-0 win over Thompson Rivers.

This win makes Spartans goalkeeper Sebastian Colyn (Langley, B.C.) the winningest keeper in Spartans history with 27. Friday's victory moves Colyn past his tie with former Spartans keeper Andrew Fink ('12, Burnaby, B.C.).

Christian Rossi (Surrey, B.C.), the reigning Spartan athlete of the week, added a goal and an assist for the Spartans with Jacob Low (Port Moody, B.C.) providing the other tally.

The visiting Spartans opened up the game in the 1st minute as Jacob Low capitalized on a costly TRU turnover, putting TWU up 1-0. Rossi leapt to intercept a pass deep in TRU's half, with his header bouncing onto the foot of Low who made no mistake in firing it into the back of the net.

TRU created a vast majority of the chances throughout the remainder of the first half, but a combination of resolute TWU defending and some timely saves from Sebastian Colyn sent the sides into the halftime break with the Spartans in the lead.

TRU kept that pressure going into the second half, but it was the Spartans who were able to score against the run of play. Six minutes into the second frame a misplayed pass from the TRU defence allowed Rossi to slip in and chip the ball over TRU's charging keeper.

NOTABLE
  • First-year Christian Rossi is on fire, scoring in each of the past three weekends for a tally of three goals and one assist so far in the 2021 Canada West season.
  • With this victory, the Spartans are now first place in Canada West's western conference. Their 3-0-4 record bears 13 points, the current high in Canada West.
QUOTABLE
TWU Head Coach Mike Shearon
"Happy with the result. We defended well and did a lot of things we normally don't do, really well.

"In the end it was a really good group game for us, winning this game in a different way than our usual selves. We'll see what happens tomorrow against this hungry TRU team."
