LANGLEY, BC – Trinity Western lost 56-3 against the Vancouver Wave Saturday afternoon at the Spartans Willoughby Community Park.
TWU flyhalf
Keegan Marengo (Johannesburg, South Africa) slotted a penalty early in the first half to give the Spartans (0-3) a 3-0 lead. However, after that, the visiting Wave (2-0) put up 56 unanswered points en route to the win.
With heavy rain in Vancouver creating unplayable field conditions, the game was moved to Langley at on Saturday morning, with both teams travelling to Willoughby Community Park after having initially arrived at Connaught Park, where the game was meant to be played. The contest was originally scheduled for the Gerald McGavin Centre, but was moved to Connaught Park on Friday.
AS IT HAPPENED
The first half saw the Spartans hang around until midway through the half, whe the Wave broke open a 13-3 game with three tries not long before halftime, making it 28-3 at the break.
The Vancouver boys tallied four converted tries in the second half to duplicate their first half offensive output and hand the Spartans a 53-point setback.
QUOTABLE
TWU Head Coach Andrew Evans
"We've worked really hard on the set piece and there was a massive improvement, so big credit to the forwards for a much better lineout and scrum from the first two weeks of the Coastal Cup. It was great to have
Adam-Jay Fort (Red Deer, Alta.) in the scrums. He played some good minutes and when he had to come off, because we're not giving him 80 minutes yet,
Grayson Hardie (Chilliwack, B.C.) scrummaged really well despite not being at 100 per cent. We got our first scrum penalty out of that, which was great.
Seth Klassen's (Surrey, B.C.) lineout throwing was also great.
"For how we asked the players to play this week, our game management wasn't delivered upon, which is a bit disappointing. Our coaching group will assess how to help our players make those decisions when we're under pressure from these good teams that we're playing.
"Looking ahead to UVIC, we know we have our hands full there, but we know we need to play the way we train and show up on game day."
