ST. ALBERT, Alta. – For the second time in as many games, the Trinity Western women's soccer team earned a preseason draw, as the Spartans took a 2-2 result from their Wednesday afternoon tilt with Calgary.
TWU is now 0-0-2 in the preseason, after a 3-3 draw with UBC at home earlier in the week.
AS IT HAPPENED
Kat Harvey (Coquitlam, B.C.) opened the scoring in the first half, heading home a cross from
Aliya Coy (Calgary). Calgary equalized before halftime, but TWU's
Charity Field (Burnaby, B.C.) put the Spartans ahead once again early in the second half. However, a Dinos goal off a set piece forced the visiting Spartans to settle for a tie.
QUOTABLE
TWU Head Coach Graham Roxburgh
"We started very well. I thought we passed the ball very nicely through the midfield and early pressure generated a really nice team goal. We were able to play Aliya out wide, who beat her defender and put a brilliant cross to Kat Harvey, who scored on a header.
"We played well and continued to press, but a corporate team defending mistake led to their tying goal. In the second half, we started well again and Charity pinged one into the window to put us ahead. However, unfortunately, we fell asleep a bit on a set piece and they were able to equalize.
"Overall I was quite pleased with many elements of our game, but I was disappointed with two soft goals. I thought Calgary posed a very good test for us. They are athletic and competitive and quick. It was two good teams getting back into the rhythms of good Canada West soccer.
"I thought
Olivia Kranjcec (Okotoks, Alta.) was excellent in the first half. Liz Hicks (Surrey, B.C.) was brilliant again.
Sierra Halldorson (Winnipeg) dominated the midfield for the better part of the first 60 minutes and Kat Harvey was very good and was rewarded with a nice goal.
"We're growing as a young team and we saw some good contributions from a lot of players."
