Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

SPARTANS DRAW SECOND STRAIGHT AGAINST UBC OKANAGAN

LANGLEY, B.C. – Trinity Western and UBC Okanagan went scoreless in Saturday's 0-0 draw.

As a result, the Spartans now see their record move to 0-0-2 after their home, and season-opening weekend in Langley, B.C.

After the Spartans drew to UBC Okanagan on Friday, the script of the game was dominated by the Spartans throughout a large portion of the game. A goal for the home side seemed to be inevitable, but could never be found with the series of chances created by the Spartans.

A disallowed goal by second-year Soren Di Sabatino (Langley, B.C.) capped off a first half riddled by chances for the Spartans.

The later stages of the second half saw UBC Okanagan come to life, generating their most threatening scoring chances of the game. In the 65th minute, fourth-year keeper and team captain Sebastian Colyn (Langley, B.C.) made a fantastic save to stop a near-certain goal.

The final chance of the game came in the 82nd minute as Christian Rossi (Surrey, B.C.) wheeled in a well-placed cross which was just out of the reach of streaking Spartans defender Noah Kroeker (Calgary). Kroeker slid to reach the ball, but his effort wasn't enough as he was unable to direct it into the goal as the ball rippled the outside of the net.

NOTABLE
  • After this weekend, the Spartans all-time record against UBC Okanagan moves to 6-4-4.
  • Sebastian Colyn made three saves en route to his first clean sheet of the 2021 season.
  • Charles Nana (Calgary) was one of many first-years who debuted for the Spartans in their season-opening weekend. Nana made an immediate impact on Saturday's game, playing part in one of Trinity Western's best scoring chances of the night.
  • Soren Di Sabatino's disallowed goal in the 41st minute would have been the second-year's first as a member of the Spartans.
  • The Spartans are two of three weekend matchups in Canada West drawing both games as Thompson Rivers and UBC did the same.

QUOTABLE
TWU Head Coach Mike Shearon
"We dominated in terms of possession, but we didn't have a ton of cutting-edge either. I'm happy with the boys that came in and started. I thought our team was really good, but soccer is a game of chance. If you don't create enough chances, you won't win.

"I think everyone did well. Soren (Di Sabatino) played well as our striker and Luca Alberti (Burnaby, B.C.) ended the game well. Brandon Torresan (North Vancouver, B.C.) was fantastic. He was all over the place, covering the field in so many ways. I also have to give credit to Sebastian (Colyn) who bailed us out a couple of times."

UP NEXT
The Spartans (0-0-2) will look for their first Canada West win of the season next weekend against UNBC (0-1-1).
