NO. 2 RANKED SPARTANS WIN 5-0 OVER FRASER VALLEY

Box Score LANGLEY, B.C. – The no. 2 ranked Spartans are now 5-0-0 after another significant victory, beating cross-town rival Fraser Valley 5-0.

Fraser Valley came out firing, nearly taking advantage of some mistakes by Trinity Western's back-line. Spartans goalkeeper Hannah Miller (Langley, B.C.) stepped up when needed to neutralize the threats posed by Fraser Valley.

Although Fraser Valley was threatening, the Spartans slowly took control of the game. It was in the 37th minute when a beautifully taken free kick by Sierra Haldorson (Winnipeg) found team captain Elizabeth Hicks (Surrey, B.C.) in the box to open the game's scoring.

Trinity Western added another marker just before the first half ended courtesy of stellar hold-up play by Makenna Dieterich (Langley, B.C.). Dieterich found Anna Dunn (Edmonton) with a beautiful through-ball, leaving nothing but the keeper to beat for Dunn, the reigning U SPORTS Female Athlete of the Week.

The Spartans got right back to work after the half, scoring two more goals. Elizabeth Hicks added her second of the game in the 49th minute while Sarah Bazille (Coquitlam, B.C.) chipped Fraser Valley's keeper from distance to grow Trinity Western's lead to four.

Trinity Western's back line continued to settle throughout the game, tightening their grip more after each scoring chance was turned away. With the Spartans possessing and defending in a strong manner, Dieterich and Dunn connected again to make the game 5-0.

NOTABLE
  • Anna Dunn, coming off an outstanding week of accolades, worked extremely well with second-year forward Makenna Dieterich. Both players played a key part in the game's script by constantly causing problems for Fraser Valley's defensive group.
  • Spartans goalkeeper Hannah Miller now has four clean-sheets in a row, beating her previous personal best of three. The third-year keeper earned Trinity Western's starting spot in 2019, starting every conference and playoff game for the 2019 edition of the Spartans.
  • It was a marvellous return for second-year midfielder Sierra Halldorson, who assisted both goals off free kicks. Halldorson plays an integral piece in Trinity Western's midfield.

QUOTABLE
TWU Head Coach Graham Roxburgh
"It was a really weird first half. I thought we were poor in the half, we were really passive until the 30th minute when we started to win the ball higher up the park. It's always going to be a tricky encounter until we score.

"We were gutted to lose Sarah Bazille tonight. We'll be looking for more players to step up in her position."

UP NEXT
The Spartans will be at home again on Saturday to play Fraser Valley again.
