SPARTANS HANG ON FOR RECORD WIN

 
KAMLOOPS, British Columbia – The Trinity Western Spartans made program history Friday night as the Spartans set a new record for consecutive wins with an 83-80 victory over the Thompson Rivers WolfPack at the Tournament Capital Centre in Kamloops, B.C.  TWU is now 7-0 to start the Canada West season, which betters the mark set in the 2018-19 season when TWU started the season 6-0.
 
TWU's Nicole Fransson nearly tied the Spartan rebounding record with a career best 18 rebounds, to go with 10 points, coming up one rebound shy of the record. The Spartans Kianna Weins led TWU in scoring finishing the night with 24 points and nine rebounds. Elana Sireni with 24 points and Jessica Orr with 16 points led the WolfPack
 
AS IT HAPPENED
The Spartans started the game with a 10-0 streak, before the WolfPack got themselves on the board. TRU answered with a 6-0 run to cut the TWU lead to four points, 10-6. The Spartans responded with an 11-4 run to take a 21-10 lead with just over three minutes remaining in the opening quarter. TWU finished the opening quarter with an eight point, 27-19 lead.
 
The WolfPack had a much stronger second quarter. TRU opened the second frame with an 11-7 run to trail 34-30 with six minutes remaining in the period. After a timeout by Spartans, TWU went 4-0 to build their lead back to eight points, 38-30. The final three minutes had the teams exchange baskets as the Spartans finished the opening half with a 12 point, 45-33 lead. TWU shot 45.9 percent (17-37) from the field, while TRU shot 36.4 percent (12-33). The Spartans finished the half with a 26-17 edge in rebounds. Nicole Fransson finished the half with 13 rebounds and eight points, while Kianna Wiens finished with 13 points and three rebounds for the Spartans. Elana Sireni with nine points and Kelsey Cruz with eight points led the WolfPack.
 
The two teams exchanged baskets to open the second half as TWU led 52-38 midway through the third quarter. The WolfPack cut the lead to 13 points, 61-48 with two minutes remaining, but were unable to get the cut the deficit to single digits. TWU finished strong and led by 17 points, 67-50 at the end of 30 minutes.
 
TRU started the fourth with a 9-3 run, to cut the lead to 11 points, 70-59, with five minutes remaining. The WolfPack kept pushing and cut into the Spartans lead with a 15-8 run to trail 78-74 with two minutes to go. Weins answers with three pointer at 1:30 to give TWU 81-74 lead. The WolfPack continued to challenge down the stretch and made it a one possession game, trailing 82-80 with 12.5 seconds remaining. TWU had a number of fouls to give and TRU was forced to foul the Spartans to get the ball back. The WolfPack got the ball back after Weins with 1-2 from the foul line to give the Spartans a three point lead, 83-80 with 6.7 seconds remaining. Danijela Kovacevic three point attempt at the buzzer missed the mark as Trinity Western held on for the three point win, 83-80.
 
NOTABLE
  • The Spartans last loss in Canada West conference play was Feb. 7, 2020.
  • Over two seasons TWU is now on an eight game winning streak in Canada West Conference play.
  • TWU also had a six game winning streak during the 2017-18 season when the finished the season with a 16-4 conference record. The Spartans ended that year fourth in Canada West.
  • Corinna Reimer holds the TWU rebounding record with 19, which she set in a 60-54 loss at Manitoba on February 12, 2011. The CW rebound record is 31, which was set by UFV's Sarah Wierks on Jan. 31, 2015 at Mount Royal.
  • TWU finished the night shooting 42.3 percent (30-71), while TRU shot 36.8 percent (25-68).
  • The Spartans dominated the boards with a 50-37 edge over the WolfPack.

The Spartans and the WolfPack will match up again tomorrow afternoon in Kamloops, B.C. Game time at the Tournament Capital Centre is set for 3 p.m. The game can be seen live on Canadawest.tv. The Spartans will return home to the Langley Events Centre January 13 and 15 when they will be facing the Fraser Valley Cascades and the TRU WolfPack respectively.
