WINNIPEG – Trinity Western defeated Manitoba 5-4 at the Wayne Fleming Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Five different goal scorers made their way onto the sheet for TWU (4-4) in their victory as
Olivia Leier (Regina),
Brooklyn Anderson (Shellbrook, Sask.),
Kate Klassen (Chilliwack, B.C.),
Amy Potomak (Aldergrove, B.C.), and
Kara Yackel (Winnipeg) all found the back of the net. U of M (3-3) was led by a two-goal performance from Jena Barscello while Camille Enns and Kate Gregoire also scored.
Mabel Maltais (Edmonton) earned her second win of the season, bringing her record to 2-2 on the year. Maltais stopped 22 of 26 shots faced, winning the goaltending battle against Bisons goaltender Emily Shippam who made 20 saves on 25 shots.

AS IT HAPPENED
TWU jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first period with Leier (3:25) and Anderson (19:11) beating Shippam for a 2-0 lead after the first frame of play.
Bisons forward Barcello scored 14:57 into the second period, but Klassen got the Spartans back to a multi-goal lead before the period's end (18:57), wrapping the second frame up at a 3-1 line favouring TWU.
A hectic third period resulted in a total of five goals scored. Barcello and Enns got the Bisons going, tying the game up 9:04 into the third. TWU wouldn't take long to regain a multi-goal lead with markers scored by Potomak (10:03) and first-year forward
Kara Yackel (11:10) standing as the final difference makers. Manitoba added one more goal from Gregoire 12:47 into the third, but the Spartans were able to hold on for the 5-4 victory.
NOTABLE
- The Spartans are 1-3 all-time against the Bisons. TWU has never played a home game against U of M.
- Yackel's goal stands as the first Canada West marker in her career.
- Anderson is now ranked third in scoring on the conference leaderboards. The second-year forward has now moved to four goals and five assists through eight games played. Potomak trails Anderson in fourth place, but leads the conference in goals (6).
