EDMONTON – Trinity Western forward Amy Potomak (Aldergerove, B.C.) scored late in the third period but it wasn't quite enough as the Spartans lost 2-1 against MacEwan Friday.
Potomak scored her seventh goal of the season on the power play with 1:45 to play in the third period, but that was it for a TWU offence that put 36 shots on the Griffins net.
The Spartans record drops to 4-5 while the Griffins improve to 3-6.
The Griffins offence came via a pair of first period goals, with Hailey Maurice and Kori Paterson scoring just over two minutes apart late in the stanza.
TWU's
Kate Fawcett (Tottenham, Ont.) made 35 saves for the visiting Spartans, while MacEewan goalie Brianna Sank stopped 35 of the 36 shots she faced.
TWU was 1 for 8 on the power play while MacEwan was 0 for 5.
AS IT HAPPENED
MacEwan outshot the Spartan 18-11 in the first period and were rewarded late when Maurice opened the scoring with 2:13 to play in the frame. Paterson double the MacEwan lead with nine seconds left on the clock.
TWU outshot MacEwan 14-8 over the middle 20 minutes, with MacEwan taking five penalties in the period, but the Spartans were unable to find the back of the net.
The teams traded shots in the third period, with each team collecting 11, but it wasn't until inside the final two minutes that Potomak finally broke through offensively.
