SPARTANS FALL 5-2 TO NO. 4 CALGARY

LANGLEY, B.C. – Trinity Western fell 5-2 to No. 4 Calgary at the George Preston Arena on Saturday.

The Spartans (1-11-1) got power-plays goals from Josh Borynec (Parkland County, Alta.) and Jarrett Penner (Saskatoon) in the loss while the Dinos' (11-3-0) goals were scored by Connor Gutenberg, Jaeger White, and Jadon Joseph, who had hat-trick.

TWU goaltender Berk Berkeliev (Calgary) stopped 42 of 47 shots he saw while Carl Stankowski was only forced to stop 20 of 22 attempts on his net.

AS IT HAPPENED
The Dinos were the only side to find the back of the net in the first period as Gutenburg scored at the 2:26 mark. The first frame of play's shots favoured Calgary 10-7.

The remainder of the game's goals were scored in the second period, starting with White's goal 1:14 into the period. Borynec's power-play marker came two minutes later, bringing the Spartans within one goal at that point. Joseph proceeded to score three unanswered goals himself before Penner capped off the period at a 5-2 line favouring the Dinos.

QUOTABLE
Ben Walter – TWU Head Coach
"I liked our effort today. We played with a lot more energy than yesterday, and we did some good things that we need to build on. Calgary capitalized on their chances, and they came at us hard like we knew they would. We had a better pushback as far as our effort today.

"The Borynec-Joss-Sartor line gave us a lot of energy, and Nicksha Eric (Fort McMurray, Alta.) looked comfortable in his second game of the season. Happy with his progression throughout the year."

NOTABLE
• First-year forward Mikol Sartor (Winnipeg) assisted on both of TWU's goals, earning his first multi-point night in Canada West play.

UP NEXT
The Spartans travel to Regina to take on the Cougars (1-9-1) next weekend.
