CALGARY, Alberta - A balanced attack, strong net-minding, and a pair of goals less than 15 seconds apart in the second period gave the Trinity Western Spartans a solid a 5-1 win over the Calgary Dinos Friday night from Father David Bauer Arena in Calgary.
TWU's
Kate Fawcett (Tottenham, Ont.) made 26 saves to earn the win for the Spartans, who improve to 7-5 in Canada West, while Calgary's Gabriella Durante made 17 saves in the loss as the Dinos drop to 4-7 in conference play.
Scoring for the Spartans were
Michela Naccarato (Edmonton) (1/13:36),
Reilley Kellner (Langley, B.C.) (2/2:23),
Brooklyn Anderson (Shellbrook, Sask.) (2/2:35, 3/19:06), and
Jordyn Matthews (Okotoks, Alta.) (3/0:26). Calgary's Alli Borrow (2/19:26) scored the lone goal for the Dinos.
AS IT HAPPENED
The Spartans
Michela Naccarato started off the teams scoring this evening. After a great initial save by Gabriella Durante to push the puck behind her own net, Naccarato brought the puck back in front and was able to get one past the Dinos netminder for the 1-0 lead 13:36 into the game.
Calgary responded just before intermission off the red-hot stick of Alli Borrow. The fifth-year found the back of the net for the fourth time in the last three games and the sixth time this season on a blast from the right wing to tie things up just before intermission.
That momentum didn't last for Calgary, however, as TWU was able to jump on top early in the second and grab hold of this game.
Reilley Kellner scored just 2:23 into the second to put the Spartans back on top, only to see teammate
Brooklyn Anderson double up the lead just 12 seconds later.
In the third period, Spartans
Jordyn Matthews scored just 26 seconds in to stretch the lead to 4-1. Anderson passed in front of Durante's forehand for Matthews to shoot the puck straight in. Anderson would later end off the game with an empty net goal to seal the Spartans with a 5-1 win.Â
QUOTABLE
TWU Head Coach Jean Laforest
"We had a solid outing tonight in net from
Kate Fawcett. She was a difference maker on several occasions in this game. Our scoring was distributed throughout our lines tonight. Depth offense is something we have been seeking and it was great to see some players score their first USPORTS goal tonight. Overall a solid effort which included a short bench on the defensive side."
