SPARTANS FALL AS LETHBRIDGE MOUNTS COMEBACK

CALGARY – Trinity Western fell 76-67 to Lethbridge on Sunday at the Jack Simpson Gym on Sunday, cutting their program-best 2021-22 season short.

The Spartans were led by a 17-point performance by Kianna Wiens (Regina), who played her final game in a Spartans uniform on Sunday. Wiens has been incredible for her entire career with the program, averaging 12.0 points per game in her final season with the team. The fourth-year guard also chipped in with five rebounds and five assists in Sunday's defeat.

Hailey Van Roekel (Langley, B.C.) and Nicole Fransson (Edmonton) also put forth strong efforts in the defeat. Van Roekel went 7-15 from the field to tally 16 points, six rebounds, and a game-high of four steals. Fransson put together yet another double-double, posting 12 points and 15 rebounds in the match.

For the Pronghorns, it was Haily Weaver's 22-points and 10 rebounds who accelerated Lethbridge to victory.

AS IT HAPPENED
The Spartans edged past the Longhorns in the first quarter of play, outscoring the future victors 16-15. Wiens and Kailey Reimer (Abbotsford, B.C.) scored a game-high of five points in the quarter to lift the Spartans past Lethbridge in the first frame.

Wiens added eight more points in the second quarter to end her first half with 13 points scored. Once again, the Spartans pulled ahead even further, shooting 57.1 percent from 3-point range to claim a 36-32 lead over the half.

The Pronghorns won their first quarter of Sunday's game in the third, narrowly ousting the Spartans 17-16 to round off the quarter at a 52-49 lead for TWU.

With TWU holding a lead, the Spartans sported a healthy run at the beginning of the fourth to take a nine-point lead. Still, the Pronghorns refused to relent, mounting a massive 15-0 run to overtake the Spartans for the first time since the first half. Although TWU's Kailey Reimer sunk a three to bring the game within four, the Spartans still couldn't extinguish the fire that the Pronghorns had caught, rolling TWU's season to a close.

NOTABLE
  • With a victory in Sunday's game, TWU would have advanced to the Canada West Final Four, giving them two chances to qualify for the U SPORTS Championships.
