SPARTANS SHUT OUT BY COUGARS

CALGARY, Alberta– The Mount Royal Cougars were too much for the visiting Trinity Western Spartans Sunday afternoon in Calgary, Alta, as the No. 7 ranked Cougars earned a 2-0 victory to remain unbeaten and hand the Spartans there third loss of the season. The loss drops the Spartans to 4-3-1, while the win improves the Cougars to 6-0-1

TWU keeper Alexander Cordeiro (Burnaby, B.C.) made five saves in the loss, while Mount Royal's Sterling Kerr and Sjard Strauss each made one save as the split the minutes in the Cougars victory.

The Cougars opened the scoring in the 15th minute on a goal by Mohamed El Gandour to put the home team up 1-0. Gandour got open on the left side behind the TWU back line to go in alone where he was able to get the ball past a charging Cordeiro

The match would remain a one-goal contest until the 71st minute, when the Cougars were awarded a penalty kick after a foul in the penalty area. MRU's Mohamed El Gandour took the PK, but TWU's Cordeiro was up to the task as he made a diving save to prevent the goal. Unfortunately, for the Spartans an unmarked Skyler Rogers was able to quickly get to the rebound to put the Cougars up 2-0 with 16 minutes remaining in the contest.

Being a player down limited the Spartans opportunities as the visitors fell 2-0 to the Cougars.
