LANGLEY, B.C. – Trinity Western hung with No. 1-ranked UBC on the scoreboard throughout much of Saturday evening's contest, but a couple of late Thunderbirds goals sealed a 4-1 win for the visitors Saturday at the Langley Events Centre.
Despite being outshot 38-11, the Spartans were within a goal until the final minute of the third period. TWU goalie
Kate Fawcett (Tottenham, Ont.) made 34 saves to keep the Spartans in the game, but two UBC goals in the last minute – one into an empty net and one with Fawcett back in net – put the game out of reach.
TWU's
Kara Yackel (St. Paul, Man.) scored the lone goal for the Spartans (3-3) while UBC (7-0-1) had goals from Cassidy Rhodes, Madisyn Wiebe, Rylind MacKinnon and Sierra LaPlante.
UBC goalie Kayla McDougall made 10 saves on the 11 shots she faced.
QUOTABLE
Peter Hay – Head Coach
"Obviously we learned a big lesson last night. Today, we came in with a new game plan on how to take away their defence and give them limited chances and to take away their speed in the neutral zone. We got outshot, but I thought we did a good job of following the game plan as a group. However, at the end of the day, we still came up short. I'm very proud of the team. They bounced back from a tough game last night and showed that we can compete with the top teams.
"
Kate Fawcett had an amazing game. Without her and her outstanding goaltending, we wouldn't have even been in this game. So hats off to her. I thought our lines played well. We had to shorten the bench a little to compete at this next level at times, but I thought our team stepped up. Now we just need to learn from this weekend and look to the next when we take on another top team in Saskatchewan."
AS IT HAPPENED
After UBC's Rhodes opened the scoring and Wiebe doubled the T-Birds lead late in the first period, TWU's Yackel scored on a power play, whipping a shot from the slot past McDougall with four seconds left in the frame.
From there, the teams played scoreless hockey until MacKinnon scored into an empty net with 53 seconds to play. LaPlante rounded out the scoring with a goal 22 seconds later.
NOTABLE
• The Spartans are 2-13 all-time against UBC, including preseason and regular season.
• TWU beat the T-Birds 2-0 in a preseason game this year (Sept. 15).
• Yackel's goal was her first of the season and second of her TWU career.
UP NEXT
The Spartans return to the ice Oct. 27-28 when they host Saskatchewan.
