LANGLEY, British Columbia – The Trinity Western Spartans settled for a weekend split with visiting Saskatchewan after a 4-2 loss to the Huskies Saturday night at the Langley, Events Centre in Langley, B.C. The loss drops the Spartans to 4-3-1, while the win moves the Huskies to 6-2-0.
Third-year goalie
Mabel Maltais (Edmonton, Alta.) made 27 stops in the Spartans loss, while Camryn Drevers was outstanding for the Huskies, making 45 to earn the win.
Second-year forward
Michela Naccarato (Edmonton, Alta.) and third-year forward
Brooklyn Anderson (Shellbrook, Sask.) got the goals for the Spartans, while Kara Kondrat, Jasper Desmarais, Isabella Pozzi, and Mallory Dyer scored for the Huskies.
AS IT HAPPENED
The Huskies Kara Kondrat opened the scoring at 17:44 of the opening frame after a goal mouth scramble saw the puck lifted into the top of the Spartans' net.
TWU's Michaela Naccarato got her first of the year with a breakaway short-handed goal at 0:59 of the second period.
Saskatchewan took advantage of a two-on-one opportunity at 13:16. The Huskies Sara Kendall found Desmarais for her first goal to put Saskatchewan up 2-1.
TWU third-year forward
Kate Klassen (Chilliwack, B.C.) almost tied the game at 14:28 when her shot from just inside the right circle rang off of the Saskatchewan cross-bar.
Pozzi got the turning point goal 19 seconds later to put Saskatchewan up 3-1.
The Huskies Dyer took advantage of a loose puck near the boards to come out front and find the top corner and put Saskatchewan up 4-1 at 18:22 of the second period.
TWU dominated the third period firing 21 shots on target, but only Anderson's slap shot from the point, off of a faceoff win by second-year forward
Olivia Leier (Regina, Sask.) on the power play, was able to find the back of the Huskies net as TWU fell 4-2.
QUOTABLE
TWU Head Coach Peter Hay
"We came in with a game plan and I thought our team executed really well. I would say that was one of our best team games of the year as far as completely dominating the play and outshooting the team significantly. At the end of the day, it's hard to lose games that you are supposed to win. Hockey is a funny game that way, however, there is a bigger picture and we are more about the process over winning and our process is in a really good place, and if we play like that day in and day out we are going to win a lot more games than we lose."
"I think as a team we keep our heads high. We are proud of our efforts and proud of our group. We didn't give up. We were down 4-1 but we battled to the end. We peppered them with shots, but couldn't find more goals. Their goalie played excellent, we just couldn't find a way to score at the end. But as a team, I'm proud of them and we will win a lot more games this year if we continue to play like we did today. At the end of the day, I can't ask for more than that."
