AS IT HAPPENED

The Spartans finished the quarter with a strong run and made it a two-point game after a lay-up from first-year centre Blessing Ibekwe (Coquitlam, B.C.) with 10 seconds remaining to make it a 17-19 game at the end of the quarter.

Five minutes into the second quarter the teams were tied at 24-24. But TWU started to control the game and after an 11-5 run were heading into the break with a six-point lead, 35-29, highlighted by a Lee three-point basket at the buzzer.

QUOTABLE
TWU Head Coach Cheryl Jean-Paul
"I really liked our response after a bit of a slower first quarter for us. The defensive statements that we made moving forward were closer to what we were looking for. The important piece for us was just how well we shared the basketball. Both Hailey and Shemaiah [Abatayo] (Vancouver, B.C.) (with seven assists each) did a great job of distributing the basketball and creating really easy scoring looks for other people. That is definitely a strength of theirs. Into the second half we did a much better job of playing to our strengths. This is weekend five of five of showing the development of our depth. It was really important for us this weekend, knowing that we still have another weekend left of league."

"It's really nice to see everybody coming in and being able to handle big chunks of time defensively and now offensively as well. The development of some of our younger players and some that have been playing less was on display today. And I think our leaders did a great job of setting the tempo and the pace and then allowing others to come in and finish the job. So it was a full team effort today and we just want to continue that into tomorrow."
