SPARTANS DROP FIRST GAME TO COUGARS

REGINA, Saskatchewan – The Trinity Western Spartans were overpowered by the Regina Cougars Friday night as the Cougars defeated the Spartans 8-0 at the Co-Operators Centre in Regina, Sask. The loss drops the Spartans to 2-20-1, while the Cougars improve to 5-18-2.
 
Rookie goalie Leon Sommer (Linz, Aust.) made 23 saves, 6 GA, in 35:26 minutes, and fifth-year Isaac LaBelle (Saskatoon, Sask.) made 14 saves, 2 GA, in 24:34 minutes in the Spartans loss. Ethan Anders made 32 saves for Regina to record the shut-out win.
 
Scoring for Regina were Jakob Brook, with two goals, Leyton Holoien, Griffin Asham-Moroz, Jayden Davis, Paycen Bjorklund, Kade Runke, and Matt Culling.
 
AS IT HAPPENED
Leyton Holoien opened the scoring with his first U SPORTS goal after taking a pass from Paycen Bjorklund at the top of the left circle and wiring a shot past TWU starter Leon Sommer.
 
The Cougars then got two goals in just over two minutes to send them into the first intermission up 3-0. Jakob Brook scored following a beautiful cross-ice feed from Barnstable, then Griffin Asham-Moroz scored on a 2-on-1.
 
The rout continued in the second with power play goals by Jayden Davis and Bjorklund, then Kade Runke scored to put the Cougars up 6-0 through 40 minutes. Brook and Matt Culling finished off the scoring with two more for the U of R in the third.
 
NOTABLE
  • The Cougars outshot the Spartans 45-32.
  • TWU finished 0/2 on the power play, while Regina finished 2/6 on the power play.
  • Last week the Spartans lost twice to the Manitoba Bisons. Losing 3-1, and 3-2 in Langley, B.C.
  • Last week the Cougars lost twice to the MacEwan Griffins 7-2, and 6-2 in Edmonton, Alta.
  • The Spartans are 0-7 lifetime against the Cougars.
  • In their last series with Regina on October 13 and 14, the Spartans defeated the Cougars 2-1, and 5-2 on the road in Regina, Sask.
