SPARTANS FALL TO VIKES IN VICTORIA

VICTORIA, British Columbia – Despite a quality effort the Trinity Western Spartans were unable to find the back of the net and suffered a 1-0 loss to the No. 10 Victoria Vikes Saturday night at Centennial Stadium in Victoria, B.C. The loss drops the Spartans to 0-3-1, while the win moves the Vikes to 4-0-2.
 
Victoria's Harry Ritter West scored the lone goal of the match in the 27th minute for the Vikes.
 
TWU third-year keeper Alex Cordeiro (Burnaby, B.C.) made four saves for the Spartans. While Victoria's Callum Weir made five saves for the Vikes.
 
UP NEXT
The Spartans have their home opener on Friday, September 13 when they host the Mount Royal Cougars for a solo weekend match. The Spartans play eight of their first nine matches on the road.

AS IT HAPPENED
The Vikes opened the scoring in the 27th minute. Victoria's Mattheus Achadinha went up the left side and battled into the TWU penalty area. Achadinha sent the ball to Matthew Pearse just above the six. Pearse heel passed the ball to an open Harry Ritter West on the far side, where he one-timed the ball into the left corner of the Spartans' net to put the Vikes up 1-0.
 
TWU's Cordeiro made two saves in the opening half, while Victoria's Weir made one save.
 
Trinity Western finished the first 45 minutes with two total shots, one on goal, and one corner kick, while Victoria finished the opening half with three total shots, all on target, and four corner kicks.
 
The Spartans had several quality chances in the second half but were unable to find the back of the Vikes net.
 
TWU's best chance came in the 65th minute when third-year midfielder Kieran Eve (Coquitlam, B.C.) weaved his way through the Vikes' back line to get a shot off from the centre of the penalty area. But his shot towards the lower left post was kicked away by Victoria's Weir.

  • TWU had a 9-6 edge in total shots, while both teams had five shots on goal.
  • Victoria had a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
  • Trinity Western is 21-25-5 lifetime against Victoria. Last season in CW matches the Spartans were 0-1-1 against the Vikes. Losing 2-1 in Langley, B.C., and tying 1-1 in Victoria, B.C. TWU's last CW win against Victoria at Centennial Stadium was 2-1 on October 12, 2018.
