QUOTABLE
Trinity Western Head Coach Ben Walter
"They started well, we gave up those two early ones, you know, it is what it is, I thought the one at the end of the first period was really hard. We go down three like that. But maybe, I hope they taught us a lesson a little bit. It's that the second game of the weekend is always the harder game. And good teams find a way to push harder in that second game, and we just didn't have it at all, really, so it's yeah, it's disappointing, but it's something we can learn from, look at how Calgary played and try to emulate that a little bit and try to find some guys who are willing to work hard and give as much as you can, even when you don't feel your best when you're not at 100 percent."
AS IT HAPPENED
In the first period, the Dinos took an early lead with two quick goals within the first two minutes, scored by Dallon Melin at 1:20 and Brendan Lee at 1:40. The Spartans then had multiple power play opportunities due to penalties on Calgary's Adam Kydd and Max Patterson, but they were unable to capitalize on these advantages. The Dinos extended their lead to 3-0 with a goal by Logen Hammett at 18:51, marking his first goal of the season. Despite another penalty against Calgary's Max Patterson for high sticking, Trinity Western ended the period without scoring to trail 3-0. Calgary outshot TWU 9-7 in the opening period.
The second period opened with a power play goal by Calgary's Logan Hauer at 1:50, assisted by Max Patterson and Jadon Joseph, taking advantage of a hooking penalty on the Spartans'
Connor Farren to put Calgary up 4-0. TWU quickly responded with a goal by
Mykhailo Simchuk at 3:06, assisted by
Luke Spadafora and
Zack Whittaker. The Dinos continued their offensive push with a power play goal from Max Patterson at 12:01, followed by a goal from Brendan Lee at 16:13, both marking their fourth goals of the season. To give the Dinos a 6-1 lead heading into the final period.
The third period was lower scoring with the only goal coming at 3:06 by Calgary's Connor Gutenberg with an assist from Adam Kydd, increasing Calgary's lead. The Dinos maintaining control through the period to earn the lopsided victory. Calgary outshot TWU 9-5 in the final 20 minutes.
