LANGLEY – The Trinity Western Spartans added their second win of the season at home on Friday, October 31st, knocking off UFV 72-52.
The Spartans came out on fire, scoring 29 points in the first quarter, and never looked back. The scoring cooled off a bit as the game went on, but the lead was too much for the Cascades. The Spartans knocked down 13 teams collectively, which was one off the record of 14, set in 2009 against Regina.
Once again, Cassidy Buchanan led the way in scoring with 18, continuing her dominant start to the year (Aldergrove, B.C.). Myrlaine Shelvey (Langley, B.C.) was super efficient off the bench, putting in 15 of her own, shooting an impressive 6/7 from the field. Sydney Bradshaw (Langley, B.C.) had 10 points, and five assists as well. Fania Taylor led the Cascades with 15 points, and Julia Tuchscherer followed with 14 points.

QUOTABLE
TWU head coach Cheryl Jean-Paul
"Obviously, we had a really hot start to the game, shot the ball really well. One of the challenges that we faced in the last few games is having a little bit of a lull in one of the quarters offensively, and I thought that we moved the ball really well to prevent that from happening. ?So it was really nice to see the team effort today, getting the ball to the people that were knocking down shots and finishing well and celebrating each other and it's always fun when everyone is a part of the success. The 21 assists today is a number that stands out for me. I also think that, you know, we generated some offence through offensive rebounding and had some great second efforts. ?It's everyone trying to find what they need to contribute for us to have success and I thought that's one of the reasons why we had a great game today. Everybody was finding the little niche that they needed to step into for us to have success, whether that was, you, just making that extra pass and not over dribbling it and hitting the open shooter, knocking down the shots. Obviously, it's great ball movement, but it doesn't count unless that person knocks down that shot. So, I mean, for us to hit 13, threes, 50% from the three-point line is always nice, and especially when a team either drops into a zone or a different type of scoring look, we've struggled in the past to be able to attack that, but I thought we kept finding the right person at the right time and maintained it. ?We won all four quarters today, that was an important part for us just to be able to generate the type of energy that we are hoping to maintain quarter after quarter after quarter. I thought the first group did a great job of establishing our style of play and everybody else that came in after them maintained that style of play. And for us to continue doing that is a sign of really good things to come."
