SPARTANS FALL TO RED LEAFS IN NON-CONFERENCE MATCH

LANGLEY, British Columbia – The Trinity Western Spartans dropped a 2-0 decision to the visiting Simon Fraser Red Leafs in a non-conference exhibition match Friday afternoon at Chase Office Field in Langley, B.C.

Scoring for the Red Leafs were Sarah Caravatta (11) and Sofia Faremo (13).

TWU third-year keeper Yasmine Pahal (Surrey, B.C.) played the full 90 minutes for the Spartans. SFU's Sarah Loewen played 67 minutes for the Red Leafs, while Sofia Piperine played 28 minutes.

A two-minute burst proved to be the difference between the two squads, with SFU scoring in the 11th and 13th minutes. The TWU fourth-year midfielder Sophie Crowther (New Westminster, B.C.)  came close to putting the Spartans on the board with a goalpost shot in the 19th minute, and stopped on a breakaway in the 86th minute.

QUOTABLE
Graham Roxburgh, TWU Head Coach
"I think good teams have a hunger to make their luck, and I felt they created their chances. ?Yazi was very unlucky because she made a great save, and nine times out of 10, that ball would have squibbed away, but instead it landed right at their player's foot. I thought we possessed more in the second half, probably in the ascendancy, but in fairness, at this level, you have to play for 90 minutes, and I thought their commitment to work was different than ours. We didn't fight for each other, win duels in the first half, and we put ourselves behind, and that's always going to be tough against a mature team. ?It was a good learning experience, because the two goals we gave away were soft, and other than that, I don't remember them generating many chances."
