SPARTANS BEST WESTERN WASHINGTON VIKINGS

LANGLEY, British Columbia – The Trinity Western Spartans made the most of their opportunities to come away with a 2-0 win over the NCAA Div II Western Washington Vikings in their annual cross-border friendly Monday evening at Chase Office Field in Langley, B.C. The win improves the Spartans to 2-2-0 in preseason play.

TWU fourth-year keeper Yamine Pahal (Surrey, B.C.) played the opening 66 minutes for the Spartans, while third-year keeper Emalie Lynn (Surrey, B.C.) played for the final 24 minutes in the second half to earn the shutout win. WWU keeper Ava Courtney played the opening half for the Vikings, giving up one goal; Lillian Cobos gave up one goal in 26 minutes in the second half, with Sadie Wylie playing the final 19 minutes for the Vikings.

TWU fourth-year forward Lianna Holz (Richmond, B.C.) opened the scoring with a goal off a free kick in the second minute.

Pahal made back-to-back saves off WWU's Madeline Mays from inside the penalty area in the 52nd minute to maintain TWU's one-goal lead.

TWU fourth-year forward Mansha Sidhu (Surrey, B.C.) put the Spartans up 2-0 in the 56th minute when she was sent in alone on the Vikings' net.

The Vikings' Reese Walker nearly put WWU on the board in the 64th minute when her shot from inside the box went off the crossbar and down but stayed out of the TWU net.

Lynn made a solid stop on a point-blank shot from WWU's Audrey Holdridge in the 79th minute to maintain TWU's two-goal lead and the Spartans clean sheet.

The Spartans are now 4-6-4 lifetime against the Vikings in preseason exhibition play.

QUOTABLE
Graham Roxburgh, TWU Head Coach
"I thought that we were reactive and lethargic for the most part. We dwelt on the ball when we could have moved it quickly and made it a little more difficult for them to pressure us. I liked the way our back three played early on because I think they're very accomplished, and even though Western Washington was probably a little more aggressive, I thought we dealt with their threats. But we have to be better in possession; I think some of that's decision-making and a little bit of maturity. I like our try in terms of nobody's being lazy. But I think some girls are naive, and today's decision-making was really poor. What upset me most was our start to the second half."

UP NEXT
TWU will have a quick turnaround as they host the Calgary Dinos in a preseason matchup, Tuesday afternoon at 1 p.m. (PT) at Chase Office Field.
