Since taking over the head coaching duties in 2007 – after being an assistant coach from 2004 to 2007 – Ben Josephson, who hails from Strathmore, Alta. has helped develop the Spartans men's volleyball team into one of the most dominant men's volleyball programs in North America.
Josephson has guided TWU to five national championship titles, winning in 2011, 2012, 2016, 2017 and 2019, and has qualified for the U SPORTS championship tournament 11 times. Josephson has also led the Spartans to five Canada West championships, winning in 2012, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2020, which includes TWU’s current run of nine straight appearances in the conference final.
Over his career with TWU, Josephson has three times been named both the Canada West Coach of the Year and U SPORTS Coach of the Year, in 2011-12, 2013-14 and 2019-20.
All told, Josephson has led TWU to eight U SPORTS medals and guided TWU to a total of 11 Canada West medals.
Along with his coaching duties at TWU, Josephson is also an assistant coach with Canada’s senior women’s national side, taking the post prior to the start of the team’s 2019 season. With Josephson on the sidelines, Canada qualified for the 2020 Volleyball Nations League.
His previous national team appointments included coaching as a guest assistant with Canada’s senior men's team in 2009 and as an assistant with Canada’s World University Games men's teams in 2005 and 2011. Josephson was the head coach of Canada’s Youth National team in 2015 and 2016. He was also the head coach for B.C.’s U21 side that finished third at the 2013 Canada Summer Games.
Before moving to the sidelines, Josephson was a stand-out player for the Spartans from 1998 to 2003 and, in his final year, earned the school’s first ever All-Canadian award while, in that same year, also being named a Canada West First Team All-Star.
Josephson has a Bachelor of Human Kinetics Degree from Trinity Western and also earned a Certificate in Biblical Studies from Covenant Bible College in Strathmore. He is also an NCCP Level III certified coach. Josephson lives in Langley, B.C. with his wife Jen and their children Cooper, Zeke and Gracie.
