LANGLEY, British Columbia – Trinity Western fifth-year guard Josh Belvin (Long Beach, Calf.) has been named the Spartan Male Athlete of the Week after a record-breaking performance to lead the Spartans to a weekend sweep of the UNBC Timberwolves. Belvin finished the weekend with 59 points, 18 rebounds, and 13 steals in the two wins.
The communications student opened the weekend with a 16-point, seven rebounds, and five-steal game to help lead the Spartans to a 76-66 win over the Timberwolves on Friday night at the Langley Events Centre in Langley, B.C. Then on Saturday night, Belvin had a history-making night when he scored a TWU record 43 points to go with 11 rebounds, and eight steals to lead the Spartans to a 93-63 win over the Timberwolves.
Belvin’s 43 points, break the previous record of 42 points, held by Canada West and Spartan Hall of Famer Jacob Doerksen. Doerksen ('11) set the record in a 114-89 win against the UFV Cascades on December 4, 2010. Belvin's 43 points are the most scored in a Canada West conference game this season. The previous high was 36 by Calgary's Nate Petrone against Manitoba on January 18. Belvin’s previous career high in a Canada West conference game was 30 points, which he did in a 93-89 loss to the Victoria Vikes on January 13, 2024.
Belvin and the rest of the Spartans will finish the Canada West conference play next weekend in Abbotsford, B.C. against the Fraser Valley Cascades on Friday, February 14, and Saturday, February 15. Game times are set for 8 p.m. and 5 p.m. and can be seen live on Canada West TV.
