TOUGH WEEKEND AT UNBC FOR SPARTANS
PRINCE GEORGE, British Columbia – The Trinity Western University men's soccer team dropped their second match in two days to the University of Northern British Columbia Sunday evening in Prince George, B.C. The Spartans heartbreaking 1-0 loss puts TWU at 3-4-1 in conference play, while the win moves the Timberwolves to 3-7.
"Today was one of those games where we completely dominated play, but didn't get any value in front of the net," commented TWU head coach Pat Rohla. "Our first half was one of our best of the year, and we can be happy with our performance, but it is one of those situations, where if you don't finish you don't win."
"We are extremely disappointed, but we have to keep going," added Rohla.
For most of the game the visiting Spartans had the better of the Timberwolves. TWU would finish with a decisive 21-8 edge in total shots. But UNBC keeper Ty Venhola made 15 saves to secure the win for the Timberwolves. TWU's Evan Lowther would finish the match with three saves.
The lone goal of the match came in the 86th minute when Francessco Bartolillo's free kick from outside the left corner of the penalty area eluded the TWU defenders and slid into the Spartans net.
Spartans forward Dominic Reinold (Wesseling, Germany) finished the night with seven shots, while Braden Gant (Maple Ridge, B.C.) and Eric Dove (Port Moody, B.C.) added five and four shots respectively for TWU. Barolillo finished with three shots for UNBC.
The Spartans continue their Canada West campaign next weekend when they host the University of Victoria Vikes and the UBC Thunderbirds on Friday and Saturday. Match time is set for 7 p.m. at TWU's Rogers Field.
Match Notes: TWU finished with a 4-1 edge in corners…UNBC committed 16 fouls to TWU's seven…there were five yellow cards (UNBC four), and one red card (TWU) in the match…the Spartans Vitaliano Poletto (Calgary) received a red card in the 87th minute…
