Box Score CALGARY – Trinity Western played their second part of a two-game series against Mount Royal at the Flames Community Arena on Saturday, losing 5-0 to the Cougars on their home-opening weekend.
Â
TWU (0-4-0) put up a solid fight against MRU (3-0-1) as the Spartans certainly looked like they were a better version of themselves when compared to Friday's 60 minutes of play between the two teams.
Â
The Spartans came out of the gates hot, keeping up with the Cougars for the first couple minutes of play. Still, MRU was able to get on the board quickly, scoring just four minutes into the first period of play. On the other end, MRU were able to keep many threatening chances created by the Spartans out of the net as shots ended at 43-17 in MRU's favour.
Â
The Spartans bounced back after a first period which saw the Cougars score four goals. The team continued to create chances, defend to their best ability, and keep the puck out of their net as goaltending was a major factor for the visiting Spartans.
First-year goaltender
Kate Fawcett (Tottenham, Ont.) continued TWU's strong run of goaltending. Fawcett faced 43 shots to make 38 saves on the night. Fawcett's third period of play was incredible, warding off multiple MRU chances on the power play.
NOTABLE
- A significant portion of the night was spent in the box for the Spartans as the team took a total of 12 penalty minutes.
- Goaltending has been the biggest key for the Spartans thus far as the first-year tandem of Mabel Maltais (Edmonton) and Kate Fawcett have been consistently strong throughout the start of the season.
QUOTABLE
TWU Head Coach Jean Laforest
"We came out of the first period with a four-goal deficit. We let them take control of the game for the second half of the second period which really cost us. We played 50 out of 60 minutes really well.
Â
"It was a totally different performance when compared to last night. Credit to our team for not worrying about the score, and just playing hard.
Â
"The team gave it 100%. We're trending in the right direction. It is disappointing having these outcomes, but this is a step forward in our process."
