LANGLEY, B.C. – Trinity Western forward
Jolene Vlieg (Leduc, Alta.) is this week's Spartan Female Athlete of the Week after lifting the Spartans to two victories over Victoria.
The Spartans are now 4-0 after two consecutive weekend sweeps to start their 2021-22 Canada West campaign.
Vlieg and the Spartans defeated a talented Victoria roster on Friday, narrowly escaping with a 53-52 victory after the Vikes surged late to threaten TWU's undefeated start. Vlieg scored eight points in the win, making a massive impact on the defensive side of the ball.
Saturday was a completely different story for Vlieg and the Spartans. After a low-scoring first quarter, the third-year forward exploded for 11 points in the second quarter, eventually making her way to a game-high of 23 points once the final whistle had blown to signal a 68-62 victory in favour of the Spartans
Saturday's victory was TWU's third consecutive win over an impressive UVIC team. With the three games decided by an average of 4.7 points in favour of the Spartans, head coach
Cheryl Jean-Paul's 2021-22 roster has shown that they can come through in tight games. Vlieg's experience was on full display in both victories as she combined with a budding core of Spartans who could certainly continue to make significant waves in Canada West this season.
