SAINT JOHN, N.B. – Trinity Western University fourth-year
Grace Konrad (Edmonton) won a silver medal in the 300m with a blistering time of 38.38 on Friday at the 2022 U SPORTS Track and Field Championships, presented by Saint John LNG, while first-year Spartan Brandon Gremaud (Kamloops, B.C.) won a bronze medal in the heptathlon with a personal best 4,743 points.
Konrad, who is a three-time Canada West champion in the 300m, earned her first-ever trip to the national podium after finishing fourth in 2020 and fifth in 2019. Konrad's time of 38.38 is her fastest time ever on a flat track. She will look to continue her run of success on Saturday when she runs in the 600m final, which she enters as the top seed after running the fastest time in the preliminaries, and in the 4x200m, which she anchored to fourth place in the preliminaries.
Meanwhile, Gremaud was turning heads all weekend in the heptathlon, as he had five personal bests on his way to a third-place finish. Gremaud entered this weekend's event ranked 10th in U SPORTS and was coming off a sixth-place finish at the Canada West championships. In his first-ever national championship meet, Gremaud climbed the ladder to put himself on an all-Canada West podium.
In the field,
Sheleena Wiley (Langley, B.C.) finished seventh in long jump with a mark of 5.72m, while pole vaulter Ana Fonseca (Mexicali, Mexico) was eighth, having cleared 3.65m.
Danny Earles (Conception Bay, Nfld.) was 10th in the 300m with a time of 35.64.
The Spartans will wrap up the U SPORTS Championships Saturday with more medal hopefuls set to compete.
