WINNIPEG –
Brandon Gremaud (Kamloops, B.C.) captured bronze in the hepathlon at the U SPORTS Championships after collecting 4,926 points Friday at the James Daly Fieldhouse on the campus of the University of Manitoba.
Gremaud, who also won U SPORTS bronze in the heptathlon in 2022 and entered the competition ranked ninth overall, finished just 71 points shy of his own Spartans record, which he set by winning gold at the 2023 Canada West Championships.
TWU now has two U SPORTS bronze medals at this year's championships, as Gremaud joins
Kenny Blackman Jr. (Surrey, B.C.) who took bronze in the 60m Thursday.
In long jump,
Oke Okumo (Calgary) finished just off the podium in fourth with a mark of 7.08m. Okumo came into the competition ranked fifth after winning Canada West gold with a jump of 7.26m.
Sheleena Wiley (Langley, B.C.) finished fifth overall in long jump with a mark of 5.83m. She came into the national championships ranked sixth after winning bronze at the conference championships with a jump of 6.01m.
Constance Nankivell (Edinburgh, Scotland) was 11th in the 3000m with a time of 10:02.94.
Ana Fonseca, who won pole vault silver at the Canada West championships, was unable to compete Friday due to injury.
QUOTABLE
Shane Wiebe – Director and Head Coach
"It was another really strong and steady day from
Brandon Gremaud today. Although his quad was a concern all weekend, he managed to soldier through and grind out some remarkable results. Oke and Sheleena improved upon their rankings going into the competition but in the end, they still wanted more out of themselves. Constance looked extremely strong for over three quarters of the race but her own injury prevented her from finishing with the burst she needed to get the result she had hoped for. Unfortunately, Ana was unable to start her competition due to a nagging calf injury. Overall, we really showed a lot of heart by everyone today."
