SPARTANS SETTLE FOR DRAW WITH UBC OKANAGAN HEAT

LANGLEY, British Columbia – The Trinity Western Spartans had control for much of the match, but were unlucky and had to settle for a 1-1 draw with the visiting UBC Okanagan Heat Friday night at Chase Office Field in Langley, B.C. The draw moves the Spartans to 1-3-1, and the Heat to 0-2-1.

Scoring for the Spartans was fifth-year midfielder Francis Powell (Coquitlam, B.C.)
Scoring for the Heat was Gavin La Montagne.

TWU fifth-year keeper Yeshua Silwamba (Maple Ridge, BC) made one save. UBC Okanagan's Ronan Woodroffe made six saves for the Heat.

QUOTABLE
Mike Shearon, TWU Head Coach
"Tonight was a night that I thought we did enough to win the game for sure. Obviously, you know, it was massively disappointing that we didn't get the win. ?I don't want to take anything away from what UBC Okanagan did. They were well organized and took their chance when they had it. We'll probably look back on it and regret a couple of our decisions in the box, not being able to score. But we've got to figure that piece out, and we've got to figure out how to play over 90 minutes. We had some good moments. ?Fran's goal was really good, and we had a couple of other really good chances. But we've got to play a full 90-minute game. And until we do that, we're going to allow teams back in it, and that's what we did tonight. ?So hopefully, we can move forward and continue to persevere. Tonight was also a night of remembering perseverance, with a celebration of Ben and his attitude, as well as how he went about things. Hopefully, we can channel that a little bit tomorrow night and come out and play to the best of our abilities again."

AS IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless first half, TWU's Powell got the Spartans on the scoreboard in the 60th minute. Powell took a pass on the left side just past centre, broke up the sideline, then cut into the centre of the park, and from just above the box sent a curving shot into the top left corner of the Heat net to put TWU up 1-0.

The Heat tied the match up in the 70th minute. A pass from Oliver Deveau on the right side of the penalty area to La Montagne in the centre of the box gave the Heat a quality opportunity. La Montagne made no mistake finding the back of the Spartans' net to tie the match at 1-1. Both teams had quality chances in the final 20 minutes, but neither could break the deadlock as the game ended even at 1-1.
