Box Score REGINA – The No. 4 Trinity Western men's volleyball team wrapped up an unblemished weekend in Regina with its second straight 3-0 victory over the Cougars, winning 25-20, 25-21, 25-21 Saturday at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
The win improve the Spartans to 12-4 on the season while the loss drops Regina to 1-15.
Three Spartans hit double figures in kills in the victory, led by Nick Del Bianco (Surrey, B.C.), who had a match-high 15. Del Bianco hit .481 for the match, while Ryan Sclater (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) added 14 kills and Blake Scheerhoorn (Belleville, Ont.) put down 10. Adam Schriemer (Winnipeg) had 32 assists for the Spartans, with Daniel Grant (Chetwynd, B.C.) leading all players at the net with five blocks and libero Tyler Koslowsky (Abbotsford, B.C.) collecting a team-leading seven digs.
Andre Borgeaud had a team-high 11 kills for the Cougars, while Matthew Lueck added eight kills and a match-high nine digs. Matthew Ferstl had five kills on just seven attacks for a .714 hitting percentage. Dalton Wolfe played the majority of the game at setter for the U of R, finishing with 19 assists while fellow rookie Michael Corrigan came off the bench to collect nine assists.
"But we had a strong opponent tonight who was a bit sharper tonight than last night, but I thought we were a bit sharper as well and our offensive efficiency showed that," said Spartans coach Ben Josephson. "Our middles did a good job and, overall, everyone played well tonight.
"Our opponents are very good skill players. They dig well. They pass well. They know how to get themselves out of trouble. I thought we made a bunch of sloppy plays in our ball touches, so I don't think our reception or digging quality was as high as it needed to be, which created some problems trying to score on these guys."
Trinity Western led from wire to wire in both the first and third sets, with the Cougars only lead in the match coming on a Lueck kill on the first play of the second. Trinity Western had an immediate response, though, reeling off five straight points to go up 5-1 and force an early timeout. TWU hit an impressive .404 as a team in the victory, while the Cougars hit at a .253 clip.
Both teams will continue the conference schedule at home next weekend. The Cougars host provincial rival Saskatchewan, while Trinity Western will entertain Canada West newcomer MacEwan.
Game Notes: TWU had a 7-4 edge in blocks…the Spartans also had a 5-1 advantage in aces…TWU has won each of its last three Canada West matches in straight sets.
