Box Score LANGLEY, British Columbia – The No. 4 Trinity Western men's volleyball team captured a 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-21) win over Winnipeg in an offensively-charged contest that saw both teams hit over .400 Saturday night at the David E. Enarson Gym.
Blake Scheerhoorn (Belleville, Ont.) gave the Spartans a 20-kill performance while hitting .655 and committing just one error to lead a TWU offence that hit .471 as a team. All told, the Spartans had four players hit .375 or better on route to improving to 3-1 on the season.
Scheerhoorn's effort, which came on the heels of 20-kill performance Friday in which he hit .563, is the sixth most efficient match in Spartans history.
Winnipeg was only slightly less efficient as setter Josh McKay, who had 32 assists, helped guide the Wesmen to a .415 attacking efficiency, with David Bommersbach leading the way with an errorless 13 kills on 25 attacks.
For the Spartans, Ryan Sclater (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) added 12 kills while second-year Aaron Boettcher (Surrey, B.C.) proved effective at the net with seven kills and four blocks. Setter Devyn Plett had a match-high 39 assists.
Bommersbach's teammate Taylor Howe had nine kills while Garrett Jones had five kills on five attempts.
With the offence dominating on both sides of the net, Winnipeg ended with just one block while TWU had six.
"The message to the team was to protect home court," said Spartans coach Ben Josephson. "Split on the road and protect home court. We did that last weekend and we did that this weekend, so we've met our objectives. Winnipeg is always a tough challenge. They're always feisty and scrappy. They take the stuff away that you're doing well. We served really tough yesterday and tonight they passed really well, so that forced us to serve differently and we didn't respond well.
"Offensively, we were incredible. Every other part of our game wasn't as good as it needs to be. It just goes to show that if you can side out like that, you can overcome a lot of deficiencies in your game. I'm pleased that our offence held up, but I'm disappointed in pretty much everything else."
The first set saw intense action with the teams staying within three points of each other for the entirety. The Spartans eventually took the set with a final kill from Sclater. Scheerhoorn got off to a hot start on the night, leaving the opening set with 10 kills.
Sclater came out incredibly strong for the Spartans in the second set, collecting four kills before the game reached 20 points. Once again, the score was within three points throughout but, it was the Spartans repeating their first set score, 25-23.
The third set was also a tight affair and it wasn't until the match hit 21-17 that the Spartans led by more than four points. From there, they held off the Wesmen, taking the set 25-21 with a final kill from Sclater.
The Spartans will travel to Saskatchewan next weekend for an away series. Winnipeg returns to British Columbia to play UBC-O on Friday.
Game Notes: After collecting 16 aces Friday, TWU had just six Saturday…the Spartans have now won all four matches that they've played at the Enarson since leaving for the Langley Events Centre 2009…the last time Winnipeg beat TWU in Langley was Nov. 25, 2006, when the Wesmen won in five sets.
