SPARTANS EARN WEEKEND SWEEP, KNOCK OFF HEAT IN THREE SETS

Box Score

KELOWNA, British Columbia – The No. 1 Trinity Western men's volleyball team completed a weekend sweep with a tidy 3-0 (25-12, 25-20, and 25-18) win over UBC Okanagan Saturday.

Ryan Sclater (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) led the Spartans (15-1) with 16 kills, with Blake Scheerhoorn (Belleville, Ont.) behind him with 12. For the Heat (4-12) Kyle Hinchey set the pace with a team-high eight kills and Lars Bornemann finished with six.

First-year TWU setter Maddux Greves (Calgary) got his first start in a Spartans uniform and had 30 assists while guiding the visitors to a .333 hitting percentage.

As a team, the Spartans dominating on the attack. They finished ahead in kills (38-22), hitting percentage (.333 to .062), service aces (8-2), assists (35-20) and blocks (6-3).

"It was a really good game for us tonight," said Spartans coach Ben Josephson. "We had the opportunity to start Maddux tonight and we knew that with a freshman setter making his debut, we needed all of our guys to raise their games and they did that. Sclater came out of the gate on fire and to give Maddux that kind of a start helped solidify his confidence. Once we got off to that start, we knew that we were going to be in a good spot. To our opponent's credit, they stabilized halfway through the first set and pushed back and then had a really good performance in the second set. But I thought in the third set, we kind of broke their spirit a bit.

"Sclater was hot early and Blake heated up late and the kid was great. To be able to step in and set like that is really exciting in terms of his future and were pumped to have him on our side."

The first set saw the Spartans at the top of their game, putting away 11 kills on .348 hitting while holding the Heat to five kills on -.103 hitting. TWU took control quickly, putting together an eight-point run that included five kills from Sclater to take an 11-2 lead. The UBCO side wasn't able to put together more than two consecutive points throughout, and the visitors took the set handily, 25-12. Sclater finished the set with nine kills.

The second set was much closer than the first, with the score 16-13 in favour of the Spartans at the technical timeout. Scheerhoorn's hitting was key in the latter half of the set, putting away a number of kills to stretch the TWU lead to six at 21-15. The Heat continued to battle, though, and a pair of big kills from Bornemann and Hinchey put the Heat down 24-20. Another kill from Sclater closed out the set, as TWU took it 25-20.

The final set saw the Heat own a lead through the early going, jumping ahead 6-2. The home side held the lead until the Spartans tied it up at 10-10, then 11-11 before taking back the lead at 12-11. At the technical timeout, the Spartans had pulled ahead 16-13, and the Heat only scored consecutive points once from then on as TWU raised its game again and rolled to the 25-18 set win.

The Spartans will now prepare for a monster weekend in which they will travel to Edmonton to take on No. 4 Alberta.
