TWU BEATS NO. 6-RANKED LEWIS TO COMPLETE PERFECT CAN AM TOURNAMENT

TORONTO – Trinity Western put themselves in elite company across North American men's volleyball as they rolled to a third straight win at Can Am Volleyball Holiday Showcase, beating No. 6-ranked Lewis University 3-0 (26-24, 25-16, 25-16) to cap the tournament with a perfect record Tuesday at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre.

After edging the Flyers by just two points in the first set, TWU took it to another gear in the final two sets of the contest, cruising to back-to-back nine-point wins.

The victory secured a 3-0 record against their NCAA foes, as the defending U SPORTS champion Spartans knocked off No. 2-ranked UCLA (3-0) and the two-time defending NCAA champion and No. 4-ranked Long Beach State (3-2).

The event marked the first time in a decade that TWU has faced NCAA competition, with the Spartans winning nine of 11 sets against three of the top six programs in the United States.

TWU, who is ranked No. 1 in the U SPORTS Top 10, will stay in Ontario for three more exhibition matches, taking on Brock (Jan. 2) before back-to-back games against No. 4-ranked McMaster (Jan. 3-4).

A close first set saw the Spartans take the win after Jackson Howe (Calgary) threw down an overpass.

With momentum on the TWU side, the Spartans raced out to a 6-1 lead in the second set and never looked back. TWU pushed its lead to 13-6 midway through the set before running away with the 25-16 win.

The Spartans took a 9-6 lead in the third set before extending their advantage to five points at the technical timeout. From there, TWU went ahead 19-13 and then pulled away down the stretch.

QUOTABLE
Ben Ball
"We were really pleased with today's game. This Lewis team is huge and super athletic. That first set was a great battle back and forth. We missed a lot of serves, but we were being aggressive with it and still making volleyball plays to keep it close. We found a way to pull off that first set and then we cleaned up our serve, which really helped us in the second and third sets."

On the tournament
"We were really happy with the tournament. It was a ton of fun. We grinded through the first match against Long Beach and then I feel like we just built throughout the tournament, getting better and better and cleaning up some things."
