SPARTANS GET WEEKEND SWEEP OF WINNIPEG WESMEN

WINNIPEG, Manitoba – Fourth-year outside Kaden Schmidt (Mississauga, Ont.) was unstoppable on Saturday night as he followed up his 24 kills in Friday's win with 27 kills to lead the Spartans to a 3-1 victory over the No. 8 Winnipeg Wesmen at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg, Man. The 25-23, 20-25, 25-18, 25-19 win puts the Spartans at 4-0 in conference play, while the loss drops the Wesmen to 2-2.

Schmidt's 27 kills in four sets are the third most in TWU history. Trailing only Steve Rogalsky ('09), who had 29 kills twice, most recently in a win over Manitoba on January 13, 2008.

Second-year middle Zach Yewchuk (Surrey, B.C.) with 13 kills, while hitting .722, and five blocks, and fifth-year middle Cory Schoenherr (Waterloo, Ont. With eight kills, while hitting at .545, and three blocks, led the Spartans. Luke Lodewyks with 15 kills, and Jaxon Rose with nine kills, six digs, and three blocks led the Wesmen.

TWU fifth-year setter Anselm Rein (Erfurt, Germany) finished the night with 55 set assists to lead the Spartans' attack, while Alex Kyrkewich led the Wesmen with 36 assists for Winnipeg.

QUOTABLE
Adam Schriemer, TWU Head Coach
"Anytime you can be in the Canada West conference and get a sweep in Winnipeg, that's a big deal. Over the course of a Canada West weekend, you want to get more information and knowledge on your opponents and I think finally in the third set, we got a handle on who they were offensively and our block defence was able to really shine. Kaden was spectacular this weekend. We're super proud of Kaden and his performance tonight and he was fun to watch. I'm really happy to have Zack Yewchuk come in as a starter and put up the numbers that he did. It was a good weekend and we're happy for our guys to come away with two wins."

UP NEXT
The Spartans will now return home for a pair of matches with the Calgary Dinos on November 7-8. Game times are set for 7 p.m. (PT) and 5 p.m. (PT) and can be seen live on Canada West TV.

AS IT HAPPENED
The opening set was even throughout the early stages, with teams tied at 17-17. Trinity Western was able to take advantage of a 5-1 lead and, after a Schmidt kill, led 22-18. Winnipeg closed before Schmidt ended the set 25-23.

The Wesmen were in control of the second set early, leading 17-12. The Spartans were able to close the gap late and trailed by three points after a Jackson Corneil kill made it 22-19 for Winnipeg. The Wesmen finished the set with three straight points to even the match 1-1 with a 25-20 win.

The third set began with the Spartans capitalizing on Winnipeg's attack errors and extending their lead with a decisive 7-1 surge midway through, led by Schmidt's kills and Yewchuk's defensive stands. The Spartans closed out the set with a kill from Schmidt, sealing a 25-18 win.

The fourth set was evenly played to 16-16. As the set progressed, the Spartans capitalized on a sequence of attack errors by the Wesmen, while Schmidt contributed significantly with several key kills. A strategic timeout by Winnipeg at 20-17 did little to halt the Spartans' advance, as they maintained control. In the closing stages, the Spartans finished off the set with a5-2 run to take the set  25-19 and earn the weekend sweep.
