FONSECA-TJERNAGEL CLEARS SEASON'S BEST AT NATIONALS, FINISHES 13TH

WINDSOR, Ont. – Trinity Western fifth-year pole vaulter Ana Maria Fonseca Moreno Tjernagel cleared a season's best 3.65m in her final indoor competition as a Spartan to finish 13th overall at the U SPORTS Track & Field Championships Thursday at the Dennis Fairall Fieldhouse.

Fonseca-Tjernagel, who won silver at the Canada West Championships after clearing 3.56m, was one of six vaulters to finish at 3.65m at the national championships (accounting for the placings from eighth to 13th), but she landed in 13th, with the tiebreaker based on missed attempts.

Competing at the U SPORTS Championships for the first time, fellow Spartan Erica Udoh finished 11th overall in weight throw with a mark of 15.02m.

On the men's side, second-year Dajean Clarke set the Spartans shot put record with a throw of 13.56m to highlight a strong opening day in the heptathlon. Clarke sits fifth overall through the first four events of the competition.

Coming off winning a gold medal at the Canada West Championships, Clarke collected, 2,935 points on Day 1 of the national championships. Along with his best-ever shot put performance, he also cleared a personal best 1.90m in high jump. Day 2 of the competition is Friday, with the 60m hurdles, pole vault and the 1000m still to come.

Rui Ramsay was unable to compete in the 60m due to an injury sustained at the Canada West Championships.
