SPARTANS HOLD OFF LATE RALLY TO GET THIRD WIN OF THE SEASON
LANGLEY, British Columbia – The Trinity Western
University women's basketball team improved to a perfect 3-0 in
pre-season play with a resilient 84-76 win over the visiting
University of British Columbia Okanagan Heat Friday night at the
Langley Events Centre.
"We bent but didn't break tonight. Every year you get a new mix of
players and you have to figure out who you are. This team just has
a different mindset. They refuse to be put in a situation that they
cannot come back from," commented TWU head coach Cheryl Jean-Paul.
"There were ample opportunities for us to give up, but they just
chose not to and I'm really proud of that mind set as it is a
change of culture for us. There is a refusal to lose combined with
an action to make it happen."
"When they chose to do things well and execute we are right there.
It's just a matter of doing those things for longer stretches of
time. "
Trinity Western looked to have the game will in hand with a 71-55
lead heading into the fourth quarter, but foul trouble and a strong
push by the Heat made the final three minutes interesting as TWU
held on for the eight point win.
The Spartans were the better shooting team as they finished the
game shooting 46.3 percent (31-67), while the Heat finished at 38
percent (27-71).
TWU held a 10 point 46-36 lead at the half time break, but were
able take control of the game through the third quarter when they
jumped out to a 17 point lead, 59-42, with 5:21 remaining in the
quarter.
Rookie guard Jessica Brown
with 18 points, four rebounds, forward Kayla Gordon with
17 points, nine rebounds and four assists, guard Chantelle
Martin with 13 points and forward Kristen Ford with
12 points and six rebounds led the Spartans. While the Heat had
strong games from Jessica Jazarehee with 17 points and seven
rebounds, and Emily Kanester and Sarah Allison with each notching
11 points in the loss.
Next up for the Spartans is Queen's University on Oct. 18. Game
time at the Langley Events Centre is set for 6 p.m. PST.
Next up for the Spartans are the Queen's University Gaels. TWU
will host the OUA team on Oct. 18. The Spartans start Canada West
conference play on Oct. 31 against Manitoba in Winnipeg.
Game Notes: TWU finished with 25 turnovers, while UBC-O finished
with 20…49 fouls were called in the game, with the Spartans
Gordon and point guard Luca Schmidt both
fouling out of the game…
