Box Score VANCOUVER – The Trinity Western men's soccer team dropped a 4-0 decision to the No. 1 UBC Thunderbirds Friday on the road.
T-Birds star striker Gagan Dosanjh scored twice in the first half and added an assist in the second half to lead UBC past TWU in the penultimate game of the regular season.
Titouan Chopin and Nike Azuma scored second half goals for UBC, which improved to 10-0-1 on the season.
"UBC looked very balanced and motivated and you have to give them credit," said Spartans coach Pat Rohla. "They caught us on three counters when we had a bit of an empty midfield and we didn't cover the counters very well. They're a mature team and we're learning how to compete against guys who play really fast and with a lot of confidence."
Despite the loss, the Spartans (5-4-2) will play their final game of their regular season Saturday in Victoria still with the chance to host a playoff game. A Spartans win over the Vikes combined with Fraser Valley dropping points against UBC would see TWU finish in second place in the Pacific Division.
The Spartans can still finish anywhere from second to fourth in the division. The top four teams in both divisions qualify for the post-season with teams then competing in a cross-over style quarter-final.
"Overall, we still control our destiny," Rohla said. "We remain optimistic that we can finish second in the division. We'll battle back tomorrow and see if we can steal the milk off the porch in Victoria."
Although he allowed four goals, goalie Andrew Hicks (Surrey, B.C.) stood tall in the Spartans net as he made four saves on eight shots. The Spartans only tested UBC goalie Chad Bush once.
"Despite the scoreline, I thought Hicks still played well," Rohla said. "I also thought Elijah Adekugbe (Calgary) played well for us tonight."
Dosanjh scored in the 20th and 40th minutes to put UBC up 2-0 at halftime.
With momentum on their side, the T-Birds carried on in the second half and were rewarded in the 57th minute with a goal from Chopin and the 67th minute when Azuma tallied an unassisted marker.
The Spartans play Victoria Saturday at 6:15 p.m.
