"Obviously a tough way to end the season. Sometimes the battle just gets to you and you run out of gas. We have played some top teams really well and every weekend we see a team that is closer and closer to play-off basketball and we have been learning the hard way that when things aren't going your way on offense that you have to stand tall until the ball drops. That's what good teams are able to do and that's what we have to learn from some of the great individual players and teams that we've seen especially in this second semester."
Rookie guard Jessie Brown (Langley, B.C.) with 15 points and rookie forward Tessa Ratzlaff (Abbotsford, B.C.) with 13 points and nine rebounds led the Spartans, while Amira Giannattasio with 31 points, Jessica Renfrew with 18 points, Jenna Bugiardini with 14 and Cassandra Goodis with 11 points all had double digits in scoring for the Vikes.
The Spartans were behind by 14 points, 25-11, after the first quarter, but a strong second quarter saw TWU cut the Victoria lead to eight points, 41-33 at the end of the first half.
The Vikes had an exceptional third quarter as they blew the game open by outscoring the Spartans 28-6 to lead 69-39 heading into the final quarter. The final frame was more evenly played with Victoria having a 24-19 edge to make the final 93-58 for the Vikes.
In their final games as Spartans forward Laurissa Weigl (Stony Plain, Alta.) finished with six points, three assists and two rebounds while guard Chantelle Martin (Surrey, B.C.) finished with two points and one rebound. Weigl finishes her career with 487 points and 286 rebounds. Martin finishes her TWU career with 346 points, 134 rebounds, 61 assists and 41 steals.
"We want to thank Chantelle and Laurissa for their years of hard work and dedication and wish them the best as they move on into the next phase of their lives. And for our younger ones, they need to draw motivation from this season to keep improving as individual basketball players and improve together on the things that will help us get better as a program," added Jean-Paul.
The Vikes finish fifth in the Pioneers Division and capture hosting rights for the Canada West play-in series next week. The Vikes will host the Calgary Dinos in a best-of-three series next weekend, Feb. 20-22. Tonight's game concludes the TWU season.
