Box Score LANGLEY, British Columbia – The University of Regina's women's basketball team pulled into a tie for second place in the Pioneer Division with a convincing 79-43 win over Trinity Western on Saturday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
Kristin Ford (Okotoks, Alta.) came off the bench to shoot 4-for-7 from the field and lead Trinity Western with 11 points. Kayla Gordon added eight for the Spartans, who fall to 3-6 with the loss.
Charlotte Kot led all players in both points and rebounds, finishing with 16 and 13 for her fourth double-double of the Canada West schedule. Kehlsie Crone added 13 points, while Sidney Dobner had 10 points and led the Cougars in both steals (4) and assists (3).
The win improves Regina's conference record to 8-1 as the Cougars draw even with idle Alberta for second place in the division.
"There are a few ways to approach a game like today and, as frustrated as we might be with easy missed opportunities, unforced turnovers and miscommunicated defensive possessions, we also look at the opportunities we did create on both ends of the floor," said Spartans coach Cheryl Jean-Paul. "Not being able to take advantage of some of the positive defensive stops, not giving up many offensive rebounds and forcing a lot of turnovers just to give the ball back is something we have to learn from. Good teams are only going to give you so many looks and the early ones we miss force us to play with less composure as the game continues.
"We are excited to see offensive output from different players that we may not have seen as much in the first semester, but it really comes down to being able to maintain a defensive mindset multiple times in a row even if we aren't scoring. These games have to make us better and need to create a sense of urgency in training. There is still a lot of basketball left in this semester so we have to stay focused on our future opportunities starting with tomorrow night's game."
The Cougars went on an early 9-0 run and built up a 10-point lead with four minutes to go in the first quarter, and, with the exception of a brief period late in the first half when TWU got to within eight, they held on to that double-digit advantage for the rest of the game,
Regina held a 36-25 lead at the break and then took over in the third quarter. The Cougars went on an 11-0 run midway through the third that featured three-pointers on three consecutive possessions, two of which were by Crone. The Cougars led by as many as 41 points in the fourth quarter before a late 5-0 run by TWU put the final margin of victory at 36.
Regina's Caitin Zacharias hit both of her three-point attempts and finished with seven points in nine minutes. As a team, the Cougars were 30-for-49 (61.2%) from the field overall and 9-for-13 (69.2%) from three-point range. The U of R also had a 37-25 rebounding advantage.
The Spartans were 18-for-59 (30.5%) from the field and were held without a made three-pointer, going 0-for-5.
The two teams will finish off the weekend set on Sunday afternoon. Tip-off is scheduled for 12 p.m. (PST) at the CKHS.
