Box Score CASTLEGAR, British Columbia – Trinity Western jumped all over Selkirk in the first period, opening up a three-goal lead, and held off Selkirk the rest of the way en route to a 4-3 win over the Saints Friday at the Castlegar Recreation Centre.
Karsten Seidel (Delta, B.C.) scored his first goal as a Spartan at 6:17 of the first period before Ryan Scott (Surrey, B.C.) and Jarrett Fontaine (Humboldt, Sask.) added markers to give TWU a 3-0 lead.
Dallas Calvin responded late in the opening frame for Selkirk, but the damage was done and TWU never relinquished its lead.
"The key to the game was getting off to a quick start," said Spartans coach Barret Kropf. "That was one of our objectives going in and we were trying to get the crowd out of the game early. We accomplished that by opening a 3-0 lead. Overall, the guys were full value for the win. It's really tough to do that here in Castlegar. They're a well-coached team and they work hard."
Fontaine scored again in the second period to restore the Spartans three-goal cushion.
In the third period, Calvin tallied his second of the night and Tyler Kerner made it a one-goal game with just over 15 minutes to play. However, with TWU goalie Silas Matthys (Wollerau, Switzerland), who finished with 33 saves, holding the fort between the pipes, the Spartans skated away with the win.
The victory ties Matthys for the BCIHL's career wins record at 29 with former Simon Fraser goalie Andrew Parent.
Seidel added an assist on Fontaine's second goal for a two-point night while Evan Last (Surrey) had a two-assist evening.
Calvin finished with two goals and an assist.
TWU was one for seven on the power play while Selkirk was two for seven.
"Silas was solid in net again and our penalty kill had to be really good tonight," Kropf said. "They have a lethal power play and while we gave up a few, for the most part the PK was pretty good. It was another team win and when you can get a team win on the road, it builds a lot of confidence."
The Spartans and Saints renew acquaintances Saturday at 7 p.m. back at the Castlegar Recreation Centre.
Game Notes: Last year, TWU had a similar five-game winning streak that started in October and rolled into November…Last is now fifth in league scoring with four goals and six assists…amongst goalies who have played more than one game, Matthys leads the BCIHL with a 2.01 goals against average and a .933 save percentage.
