SPARTANS FALL TO THUNDERBIRDS

Box Score

VANCOUVER – The Spartans couldn't get it done on Saturday, as the dropped a second game in a row to the #10 ranked UBC Thunderbirds, with a final score of 58-45

The Spartans struggled on the offensive side of things, only making good on 29% of their field goals. After taking the lead in the first quarter, the Spartans would see their lead start to dwindle, as they could not contain UBC on the offensive end.

Myrlaine Shelvey (Langley, B.C.) led the way, scoring 13 points off the bench, going 4-10 from the field. Rookie Moriah Jansen (Spallumcheen, BC) was up next, chipping in eight points herself.

UP NEXT

The Spartans head back home to the Langley Events Centre to take on the UVIC Vikes. Tip Off is set for 6 p.m. (PT) and can be seen live on Canada West TV.

QUOTABLE

TWU head coach Cheryl Jean-Paul

"We really wanted to see a more resilient version of ourselves today and we definitely got that. Had a great start and really applied the pressure that allowed us to lead for most of the first half. We didn't respond as well to their second half effort, but that is now the next phase of what we have to improve on as we head into the last few weeks of the regular season. Our defensive improvement gave us an opportunity to compete for the game and we had a few great offensive pushes that came from those stops, but it's at this level of pressure where we have to learn how to thrive and the only way to do that is to push into it, re-evaluate and then jump right back into the challenge."

NOTABLE

  • Ball movement remained consistent, with Trinity Western matching UBC with 9 assists, indicating an unselfish offensive approach.

  • Defensively, TWU applied strong pressure, forcing 26 turnovers and recording 12 steals, which helped disrupt UBC's offensive rhythm.

  • Transition opportunities were created off turnovers, leading to 11 points off turnovers and keeping the game competitive.

  • Rebounding proved to be the key difference, as UBC dominated the glass 50–24, including 22 offensive rebounds that led to extra possessions.

  • Free-throw efficiency limited TWU's scoring potential, shooting 64.3% from the line compared to UBC's 75.0%.
